Winter Getaway

It’s a typical cold and snowy December in Central New York. Temps in the 20s and 30s during the day. We’ve been lucky: we’ve had about 4 inches of snow in the past week, but north and west of us are measuring their snow in feet, thanks to the notorious lake effect snow off Lakes Ontario and Erie. You ain’t seen nothin’ until you’ve watched the Buffalo Bills fans in their snowmobile suits, sitting on the snow that Mother Nature has piled on the seats.

We decided this was a good time to take a little winter getaway. Not from the snow, but from the everyday routine. We spent a couple of nights at the Appleview, a cozy house near Alton, just south of Sodus Bay (on the south central shore of Lake Ontario). The house is beautiful, big enough for an entire family with three bedrooms and three baths and complete with a hot tub outside the back door. (Although, at 80 degrees, and 20-something air temperature, it was a little too chilly to enjoy.)

The snow was light most of the time we were there. Never enough that driving was tough. We drove up to Sodus Bay, a hopping town in the summer, but more of a sleepy village in December. It was cold but beautiful.

It was nice to be away, and nice to come home. That’s what a good “getaway” is all about.
